Netgear AC1200 Wi-Fi Range Extender Dual Band Review

A wireless dead spot can easily get on your nerves if you like to switch rooms while working on the computer. The best way to solve the problem of incomplete WiFi coverage in your house is with device called a Wi Fi extender.

If you have a super fast network connection, you’ll need a top-of-the-line extender to ensure that your internet speed doesn’t fall off when you enter the extension WiFi zone.

The Netgear AC1200 is super fast. It can go as fast as 1200 Mbps-- that’s 1.2 gigabytes per second. If you have a 1200 Mbps internet connection, you’re really flying. A computer connected to a 1200 Mbps connection can download an entire DVD’s worth of data in about 5 minutes.

Besides the fact that it can keep up with the very fastest home internet networks, what else can the AC1200 do? Let’s take a look at some of this device’s most important features.

It only blocks one plug on your outlet — Some extenders take up two plugs, but the Netgear AC1200 only takes up one space.

802.11ac support — 802.11ac is the fastest wireless network standard currently out there, and the AC1200 is compatible with routers that use it.

Creates a super fast 1200 Mbps WiFi extension zone — If you have an expensive super-fast internet connection, you won’t experience a drop off if you move into your extension zone if you get this device.

Two amplification antennas — The two external antennas help to enhance the range of the extension zone.

Our Rating: 4.0/5

The Good

This WiFi extender from Netgear is super fast and can handle most high speed home networks.

The Bad

This device gets confused when it runs into MAC address filters. Every type of device that can connect to the internet has a unique number called a MAC address. Most people don’t use MAC address filters, but some security pros do. MAC address filters prevent unauthorized devices from connecting.

Best Suited For

People with high speed internet connections that are satisfied with basic security.

Not So Good For

Security pros or anyone currently using MAC filters to protect their local network from intrusion.

The Verdict

Netgear’s AC1200 extender works well and can handle ultra high speed home WiFi networks. The only problem with it is that it is not compatible with networks that use MAC address filtering as a security mechanism.
